Definition of Ball On
Ball On is a billiards term that is a part of Game Rule Terminology.
The ball on is any legally strikeable ball on the table. For example, in the game of 8-ball billiards, if a player is shooting solids, any ball from 1 to 7 can be the "ball on" until they are all pocketed, in which case the 8-ball is the "ball on.&Quot; In snooker, at the beginning of a player's turn, unless all are already potted, any red ball can be the "ball-on". We should note the differences between ball-on and an object ball. An object ball refers to any ball that is being shot at. In blackball billiards, when a player is shooting yellows, any yellow ball is the ball on, that is, until they have all been potted at which time the 8 ball is the ball on.
See: balls on, object ball for more on the meaning of "Ball On".
