The term carambole has numerous definitions in relation to cue sports. The first definition of carambole is a reference to the red ball in carom games. The second definition of camarbole is the general reference to the general discipline of carom billiard and carom billiard games. Carambole is also an alternate name for straight rail billiards, which is another billiard game. The term carambole may also refer to a simple carom.

In reference to the red ball, carambole was derived from the karambal; the orange asian fruit. The initial name of the fruit, karambal, was originated in the Marathi language of India, but in a corruption of language, the English translation was carambola.
