8 Ball Shot Following Opponents Ball Into the Pocket
I was playing a buddy last night. Towards the end of the game (I was on the eighth against his solids), he blocked the corner pocket with his solid ball defensively and smiled at me. I then proceeded to call "Off the 4", hit the cue with top spin, pocket the 4 via the 8, and then follow the 4 in. Needless to say, there was a dispute between us as to whether not I won. My reasoning was, I hit the eight first, and the eight into the intended pocket, with no unintended rails. Furthermore, because I called it off of his ball, my shot was legal.
Is my reasoning correct?

As far as I understand it, your shot was just fine according to all of the major North American eight -ball rule sets.
Your shot accomplished all of the following:
- The cue ball hit your ball first
- You correctly called the ball and the pocket
- You satisfied the "one ball must contact a rail after a legal hit" rule, since you pocketed a ball (which counts as "hitting a rail")
In fact you didn't even have to call the details of the combination, nor that his ball was to go into the pocket as well.

Thank you. I play a stricter variant of the game where you have to call all kisses and rails. Also I play without ball in hand, using the kitchen instead.
Thanks for clarifying.

No problem! The exact same question has been asked about 10 times in the past on this site, so it's a common point of contention and disagreement (and misunderstanding).
Here are a few other similar situations, where the same answer, more or less, was confirmed:
