I'm looking to buy a used table and have seen crazy claims about slate thickness, some up to 2" thick!

What is a reliable way to check the slate thickness on a table for sale without having to rip the cloth?

   If you can look under the table and see the slate, measure fro the floor to the slate. Then measure the height from the floor to the top of the rails, then measure the height of the rail and subtract that amount.
