balls hop off rails
Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum. I just purchased a used 1 year old Connelly table from a local dealer and have had trouble will balls hopping off the rails. We added spacers under the end rails to raise their height, and that helped. But now I think they are too high because they make a thumping sound when hit fairly hard, and they still hop occassionally. I'm wondering what the problem could be. I wouldn't expect a 1 year old table to be doing this. My question is the cushion felt seems to be looser than I would expect. From what I read, cushion felt should be really tight. Could loose cushion felt cause balls to hop and thumping noises? I've also read temp and humidity can cause it, but it's pretty bad. The dealer recovered the rails before setting it up, but I noticed there were a couple visible wrinkles. The dealer claimed it was where the felt was folded and would come out in time.
Thanks for any info.
Regards,
Habanero

I'm no expert but maybe my 2 cents worth will get someone to jump in.
It sounds like the rails are now too high. when the ball hits the rail hard what you are most likely hearing is the rail pushing the ball down into the table. look for dings in the felt right where the base of the ball sets as it hits the rail. this will also cause the ball (when hit hard) to actually jump. Billiard congress says rail height is 63.5% of ball diameter (2.25") +/- 1% which works out to 1.40 inches to 1.45 inches. I expect your gonna see your rails are higher. As for your felt, it should be snug, I would not accept wrinkles. your the customer, if you don't like it don't accept it. I wouldn't. like I said right off the bat, I'm no expert but I am mechanically inclined. loose felt... I want to say no but can't say for sure. I hope all works out for you... now if only I could get an answer to my question.

Loose felt is a total no-no and should be addressed before you do anything else. Good luck with that.

Thanks for the replys guys. One question. What is the correct way to measure the cushion height? Do you measure from the table bed to the center of the cushion nose?
Thanks again,
