Steel Pool Table Frame
Hey everyone, I have a question about pool table construction. Has anyone ever seen or heard of a pool table built with a steel frame (just to mount and hold the slate)?
I'm tossing around the idea of building my own table and I was thinking it might be stronger and easier if the slate laid on steel rather than wood, it would still be covered and decorated in wood.
I'm a metal fabricator and I'm sure that I could build the frame from steel and it would be straighter and stronger.
I currently have a table but I made the mistake of looking at it real hard one day and decided that I did not like the way it was built and decided that I could do it better. Sorry, its a disease that I have, looking forward for some input and opinions on this.

Wood has the property that is dampens vibrations readily, steel does not. In addition, I would not want to join the slate directly to the steel frame as the steel could cause/allow the slates to chip. A wooden backboard is de-rigor for good reasons.

Back in the 60s I think Sears had a table with a steel frame. I have ran across a few of them in my years of moving and recovering tables. In recent years a manufacturer made a steel frame as the long strecthers of the table but had wood as the cross members to set the slate on and match the seems. It has been done before, and I never had an issue with this style of frame except that they were noisey to play on. The wood helps dampen the sound.
