What Causes White Marks on Pool Cloth
I was doing some analysis on the billiard forum search logs, and saw that a common question is what causes white marks on pool cloth?
The answer is simple enough. The white marks on the cloth are burn marks which are caused by intense friction-generated heat when the balls are struck and in motion. The greatest heat is generated on the break shot by the cue ball. Have a look at the featured video at the very bottom of this page, and you will see in one section they used a thermal camera to see heat levels.
Thus far, there is no known way to prevent them. You can mitigate the marks though, by meticulously cleaning your equipment to prevent excessive chalk dust. The more dust on the cloth, cue tip, and balls, the more friction. The more friction, the more burn marks. Some cloth claims to have a coating to protect, but I just don't think it plays the same.
