Rules of Straight 8 Ball
The rules for Straight Eight Ball pool is similar to standard eight-ball, but with some variations which make it more difficult per-se.
Straight 8-Ball Pool rules are similar to those of regular eight-ball pool. To play straight eight ball, you follow the "traditional" rules of 8-ball, with the following differences:
- Choice of Group - In straight-eight-ball pool, if a ball falls on the break shot, the group to which that ball belongs will determine that player's group (in traditional eight ball, the table is still open after the initial break shot regardless of what balls fall into the pockets).
- Safeties - there are no safety calls in straight-eight pool. In straight eight ball, playing "safe" is not permitted (in traditional 8-ball, safety play is an important part of the game).
- Legal Shot Requirements - In straight 8 pool, the player need not make the cue ball contact either a rail or an object ball (in traditional 8-ball, this is a requirement, and failure to meet it results in a foul).
- Ball-in-Hand - There is no "ball-in-hand" in straight eight ball pool. When a player scratches, the cue ball is always placed above the head-string (in traditional 8-ball, the incoming player can usually place the cue-ball anywhere on the table).
- Calling Shots - In straight 8 rules, the players must call the pocket, the ball to be pocketed, and all cushions, caroms, combinations, and all other details about the path. Failure to do so results in loss of inning, regardless of whether the ball is pocketed or not. If you fail to properly call a shot on the 8-ball itself, it results in the loss of the game (in traditional 8-ball, the shooter need only call the pocket and ball to be pocketed).
