What are the rules around interfering with your opponent's space after your inning is over?

I play in a BCA 8-ball league and a discussion came up the other day when an opposing player would continue to hover around the pool table as his opponent shot.

  1. When your turn is over, is there a requirement to go back to your seat?
  2. Where is there a reference to this in the rules?

I have looked on several sites, but have not been able to find this specified one way or the other.

    No, interference by way of "hovering around the pool table while your opponent plays" is not allowed, and yes, there are specific regulations for this scenario.

    You probably didn't find it because it is a World Pool-Billiard Association "rule regulation" and not part of any specific game's rules. The World Pool-Billiard Association is the highest governing body for cue sports, and the BCA falls under that.

    The WPA defines "Rule regulations" as:

    These regulations address dress requirements, protests, scheduling issues, and other items that are not part of the actual Rules of Play but need to be regulated for the individual event. Some aspects of applying the regulations vary from tournament to tournament, such as the number of sets in a match and who breaks after the first rack at nine ball. The management of an event is entitled to enforce regulations for the event. These Regulations do not have the same force as the Rules; the Rules have priority.

    Your specific issue is dealt with under regulation #26—"Remaining in Player's Chair" and reads as follows:

    26. REMAINING IN PLAYER’S CHAIR

    The non-shooting player should remain in his designated chair while his opponent is at the table. Should a player need to leave the playing area during matches, he must request and receive permission from the referee. Should a player leave the playing area without the permission of the referee, it will be treated like unsportsmanlike conduct.
