Mental Preparation for Billiard Shot Making
Most misses or fouls in pool or billiards can be traced to some flaw in the basic fundamental form, stroke and execution of the shot.
Tension in the grip can cause miscue, tension in the middle grip finger can inhibit the follow through when you draw, misplaced, out of balance footing can cause you to miss the shot. The list is endless.
Many of us are impatient. We want to "just shoot". If we are off balance, we quickly shoot before we fall over. If our body is not aligned properly, we contort the body and twist everything into position. So, how many balls do you run?
When you approach the shot from "behind" the shot and get down to execute, all of a sudden, you change your mind and want to use draw instead of follow; or: you sense, something is not right in the alignment or balance. Do you merely move your stick to the desired position on the cue ball and shoot away? No!
You 'must' restart...you must step back, re-chalk, (walk around the table again if you have to) decide exactly what you want to do and then approach the shot all over again to execute the masterpiece.
Do not execute that stoke until you are positioned exactly the way you should be. If it takes longer, that is alright. Better to run the rack than to sit in the chair and watch.
