Shaft sealer?

Shaft sealer?
I recently bought a Phillipino cue (spare me the comments, please) and it came with a bare wood shaft. I've bought other cues in the past and all of them had some type of sealer on the shaft to keep it smooth, so thiis bare shaft worries me (humidity, temp changes, etc.) What can I put on the shaft to seal it? Paste wax? Beeswax? I'm looking for some common substance because I'm cynical about the "specialty" products available (Specifically, I'm not sure they're not just re-bottled common products.) Help! I have a match tonight and had hoped to use the new cue.

I use a high grade automotive pure carnuba wax (without the polishing compound). {It happens to be Mothers, and I happen to use it on one of my vehicles.}
