Odd looking joint?

A friend asked me to repair/replace his ferrule and tip, which I did.

But the joint was something I never saw before. A quick Google search suggests this maker, Dufferin, is not the only one that uses this form of joint.

The stick's over 20 years old and has a laminated shaft, something else apparently not that common, but new to my eyes.

How common would you guys say this joint is? And, flat laminated shaft from 20+ years ago?

I see Dufferin sticks commanding no premium pricing, yet the stick feels nice, when in-hand...
