Is Removing the Weight Bolt Bad?

Is removing the weight bolt bad for the cue?

I have heard that one of its functions is to hold the butt cap together but I am older and want to lighten my Mali cue.

The aluminum bolt weighs about 1 oz which at this point will help a lot. Any insights will be much appreciated.
