What is "Reputation"?
The "reputation" score a user has is meant to show others the degree and quality of one's contributions to the community.
It is a feature of the site that is still under development and not yet fully implemented.
Present Implementation of Reputation
Currently, reputation is calculated automatically, via an algorithm, based on three things, each weighted differently. This includes:
- Number of questions and articles a user has contributed (comprises 40% of total reputation score)
- Number of answers and comments a user has contributed (comprises 50% of total reputation score)
- Number of views a user's questions and articles have had (comprises 10% of total reputation score)
Thus, as of now, if a user has a high reputation score, it usually means they have contributed either:
- A lot of answers, and
- A lot of questions and/or
- Those questions have been viewed many times.
Also, currently, if a user is banned, their reputation goes to -1 automatically.
Obviously this algorithm doesn't factor in quality of the questions and answers. This is the part that has not yet been implemented (but it's on the list).
Future Improvements to Reputation
In the future, reputation will be more heavily based on other user's ratings of the questions and answers of others.
When this is fully implemented, users will gain reputation score in the following scenarios:
- When the user's answer is marked as the "accepted answer" by the person asking the question.
- When a question gets "up-voted" as helpful by other users.
- When an answer gets "up-voted" as a good answer by other users.
... and users will lose reputation in the following scenarios:
- When a question gets "down-voted" as a poorly asked question by other users. For example,
- A user asking to value a pool cue or pool table but failing to post photos, or
- failing to take the time to include relevant and helpful details in the question, etc.
- When an answer gets "down-voted" as a low-quality answer by other users. For example.
- When the answer is off-topic, or
- vague, or
- generally unhelpful
- When a user is banned for any reason
There are other ideas in the works but for now, "reputation" remains a partially implemented feature. Further updates will be made when the feature is completed.
