A robot playing pool better than a human?

No, never. It is too difficult and there are too many positional nuances.

Nah, that's not possible in the near future.

I found an article about how the robot played billiards:

Thomas Nierhoff of the Institute of Automatic Control Engineering of the Technische Universitat Munchen built and programmed a robot that can play billiards exactly the way humans do - with a cue and two hands ".

As manipulators, Nirhof used commercially available industrial grippers with seven degrees of freedom each. And above the game table, the inventor placed a camera that transmitted information to the robot about the exact position of the pockets and balls. Using a special algorithm, the autonomous device calculated the best trajectory of the impact, after which the ball rolled where it was supposed to.

The statistics collected during the experiments indicate that the brainchild of Nirhof scores about 80% of the "light" balls. And this roughly corresponds to the performance of another robot billiard player, built last year in the United States on the basis of the PR2 android manufactured by Willow Garage. The journalists of the online magazine IEEE Spectrum have already found a way to optimally organize the fight between devices. There are a couple of PR2s in Germany, so from the USA it will be enough to send a special "game" firmware over the Internet.
