Livingston's Billiards Bradenton - Pool Hall Info

The clean, airy and modern facility at 4828 14th St. W. is not the typical dingy, smoky pool hall some associate with the game of skill. "We're really a family billiard parlor," said Keith Amon, who has owned Livingston's for more than 20 years, "Those other places are bars with a pool table while we're a billiard parlor that serves beer." Livingston's moved in May from its original location about a mile and a half south on 14th Street West. Amon, and his daughter, Kathryn Amon, who has been managing the business for about six years, think the move will only help improve their bottom line.

Business had been off about 20 percent during the last 10 years at the old location, one of the factors in seeking new facilities, Kathryn Amon said. Conditions continued to deteriorate and Keith Amon knew he had to move his business. "Business was suffering and it wasn't all because of the recession," he said. Not only were the rented facilities not properly maintained, but the neighborhood drew a rough crowd, he said. "In the process of deciding to move, we decided to upgrade," Keith Amon said. "Our new location provides for a better walk-in clientele."

The tables are arranged in one large area unlike the three storefront-size rooms at the former location. There are 50-inch plasma screen televisions, a smoke-free room, granite bar tops, and better ventilation along with the cleaner fresh look. Since the move, the business has been holding its own. "We've been close to even each month," Kathryn Amon said. Like other entertainment-oriented businesses, Livingston's has had to compete with the cultural shift toward home leisure activities like cable television, the Internet and game boxes. "We're trying to get people to get out more with the slogan "live a little," Kathryn Amon said.

Long-time Livingston's customer Adam Keenan said he enjoys the getting out of the house. "I like the competition of pool," said Keenan, who has been coming to the billiard parlor on and off for 18 years. "It's an enjoyable sport." He's glad the Amons moved to the new location. "It's a lot more classier, cleaner," Keenan said.

Livingston's battle for customers is much the same at other billiard halls across the country. "Billiard playing is down due to home electronics," said Shane Tyree, director of communications for Billiard Congress of America, a national trade organization for billiard supply manufacturers, retailers and billiard room operators. Retail and manufacturing sales are down due to the economy, but the revenues of the billiard rooms varies with the region, Tyree said. "In talking to room operators across the country, some are having a great year, but it's hard to tell (the state of the industry nationally)," he said.

According to the Billiard Congress of American Web site, a Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association 2010 study found that more than 43 million people play billiards or pool, with 51 percent of them under 35 years of age. The Amons think their 2012 revenues will be same as this year's. "I don't expect much to change (in the economy) until after the election," Keith Amon said. But they are prepared to hang in there because of their loyal customer base, Kathryn Amon said. "Our best promotion is word-of-mouth," she said. "Our job is to make sure our well-trained staff knows what kind of atmosphere we're trying to offer." Many of the regular pool players at Livingston's belong to leagues. The billiard parlor can host special parties and events and has a limited food menu of sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, chicken strips and an assortment of sides.
