Gold Crown Billiards New London - Pool Hall Info

2012 was the 20th Anniversary of John Fargo's ownership of Crown Billiards! Many changes have taken place under John's direction. In 1997 John married his wife, Linda, on the tradeshow floor at the BCA Expo in Las Vegas. 1999 brought the expansion of Crown. A complete Pro Shop and Non-smoking room were added. This year; Who knows!

Welcome to crown billiards of Connecticut history page! this history is only possible through Sy and Dolly eckstadt's generous gift of photoghraphs and printed materials. Most of the photos are the work of billie billing and fran crimi. both talented wpba players and photographers. Other photographs are works of unknown origin. we also thank those talented individuals for their contribution to the historical documentation of gold crown billiards.

Introduction

Sy and Dolly Eckstadt were an adventuresome couple in 1963. They took the risk and opened Gold Crown Billiards in November of that year in of all places the new london shopping center, new london connecticut. they were intent upon breaking the stereotypical attitudes toward the sport of pocket billiards. their "room" was to be one that attracted and welcomed all; the "old" pool players, families, teenagers and especially the females. both Sy and Dolly loved the "girls"! their dedication and persistence in promoting the sport and their success are documented by the following pictoral history. enjoy!

honorees - Sy and Dolly eckstadt received many awards during their reign as king and queen of gold crown billiards. these are three of those occasions that we can document: wpba presidents award 1981 with pres. billie billing presenting/photo: fran crimi, wpab hall of fame award, connecticut state award for dedication to promotion of billiards.

gold crown billiards as it looked at opening in 1963 - gold crown billiards was a definite change in the local billiard rooms. it boasted 19 brunswick gold crown three tables, great cloth and centenial balls. it was bright, spacious and air conditioned. some said their endeavor would fail! the eckstadts retired after 23 years in september 1986 closing the room for a period of time.

sy and his "girls". the walls of gold crown were decorated with many women player's pictures. Sy and Dolly were very busy promoting women in both amature and proffessional venues of the sport. they hosted and contributed financial support for numerous events through the years.

mosconi "champ of champions" feb. 27, 1968. only one of the many professionals who's presence graced the tables at gold crown. the exhibition events were open to all and imagine - free!

First place Peter Margo. Gold Crown's 9 ball tournament of 1978 was only one of Margo's wins at Gold Crown. In 1980 he won the gold crown open to be crowned king for new england after emerging undefeated in a field of 27 that included some of the nations top players.
