Fast Eddie's Embassy Oaks San Antonio - League Info

Hey there, boys and girls of Fast Eddie's! We've got a few questions today for you wonderful creatures of the night, and your answers could very well be the first step toward fame, fortune and something that vaguely resembles glory. Ya ready?

Do you know arcane terms like "ball in hand," "cut shot" and "gully table" and use them on the regular? Is there an 8 ball tattooed on your arm and a "This Car Makes Frequent Stops at Pool Halls" sticker on your Dodge Stratus? Do you believe that most sports don't involve enough geometry and/or drinking all night and that a sports bar is a place you go to actually play sports? Do you grab your trusty bedside pool cue instead of a bat when you hear strange noises in the night? And, most importantly, can you brutally humiliate your friends and family at billiards no matter your state of inebriation, and do you do so with no remorse whatsoever?

If you answered yes to any (or all!) of the above questions, you may very well be the next great pool champion, and we want YOU to report to your local Fast Eddie's immediately to get signed up for one of our badass pool leagues, which we'll be highlighting below.

APA Leagues at Fast Eddie's

Fast Eddie's is a proud host of league play for the very storied, very cool American Pool Association, which runs probably the biggest and best pool league there is. It was founded by famed pros Terry Bell and Larry Hubbart way back in 1979 as the National Pool League, and it now has over 265,000 players involved in the US, Canada and even all the way in Japan!

Sharks and those just looking to have a little fun can join the APA for just $25, which gets you a bunch of neat APA swag (how about that official APA patch?) and the ability to compete in local tournaments in 8-ball and 9-ball at places like Fast Eddie's. These things happen at least once a month, and sometimes even multiple times a week, so members have plenty of opportunities to get involved.

And speaking of, those who kick just enough local ass in qualifying tournaments can actually move on to big time play at the national championships held every year at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. There, the competition is wickedly fierce for about $1,000,000 in prize money! Dang, son, that's a lot of clams!

BCA Leagues

As opposed to the APA, the Billiards Congress of America is less focused on league play and more on promoting the sport as a whole, but they do run tournaments held at spots like (you guessed it) Fast Eddie's! While the name does bring to mind a bunch of dudes with pool sticks sitting in the US Congress, which is very silly, the BCA is actually one of the major supporters and organizers in the not-so-little world of pool.

Even older than the APA, the BCA was set up way back in 1948 when pool was expected to get seriously popular after WWII. Though this didn't actually happen, the BCA created an unprecedented "official" set of rules for many types of billiards games and started the organization of the game into local, regional and national leagues. Eventually pool got big again after the movie "The Hustler" in 1961, and by 1966, the BCA was promoting the hell out of the "most prestigious professional event of its time," the US Open Championships.

Local Leagues and ProPool.com

In addition to these two titans of the billiards world, all you super-amazing, horrendously talented Fast Eddie's patrons also have the option of joining a local, non-national league or to play in the contests set up by ProPool.com.

Local leagues are just what they sound like: contests organized at the local level by each Fast Eddie's location, and which play with varying rules and styles of billiards. To find out about these, or the other leagues, simply ask your favorite FE's bartender, and they'll point ya in the right direction. Also, if you're interested in local play that's less long term, but highly professional, ask about the Fast Eddie's 9 Ball Tour as well, which is our very own contribution to the professional pool circuit.

ProPool.com is a horse of a slightly different color, however, being a website that lets you virtually compete in leagues by playing games at your local pool table and using a verification system to post the scores to the contest. It sounds a little weird, but it's a trustworthy and cool way to compete that is definitely worth checking out.
