Califon Billiards is a family owned and operated billiard parlor which first opened its doors in november 1992. We have 2 TVs, music, and arcade games. Also we have parties by reservation. We can easily accommodate up to 75 people at very reasonable rates-try us! Let us help you plan your next event: office party, birthday party, family reunion etc. Come to the place where every one has a great time.

Califon Billiards has been running an inhouse 9 ball and 8 ball league for over 7 years. The Califon Billiards 9-ball handicapped league is now forming for fall/winter. It is a co-ed league with two-person teams. Matches will be held on Tuesdays at 7pm. Registration is $20 one time and a $15 weekly fee per person. To register, contact Jack Edmonds at 908-832-5900. Some of the amenities Califon Billiards offers includes:

• 10 oak Diamond pool tables with custom pool table lights - all designed with the player in mind.
• All tables are equipped with Simonis 860 cloth, a set of Brunswick Centennial balls, and Dufferin hi-run house cues. Eight of our 10 tables (#1 - #8) contain tight pockets to help sharpen your game while we also have two standard cut pockets (#9 & #10).
• Beginner and intermediate coed leagues
• Party rates and exclusive private rentals by advance reservation
• Private instruction and billiard classes also available
• $5 more for unlimited practice time from 3 pm to closing

At Califon Billiards, private and group lessons are available. Sessions are conducted on site by "Califon Ed" a BCA certified billiard instructor.

About Ed Smith, Certified BCA Instructor

Billiard instruction is given by our in-house pro "Califon Ed" Smith, certified by the BCA to teach pool in 1998. Ed has been playing pool for over 35 years and has competed and won many local tournaments. Ed won his first competition at the age of 17 when he captured the New York city title while playing on the boys club championship team; a tournament sponsored by the Billiard Congress of America in 1965. Ed attributes this achievement from having been schooled by players such as Joe "the meatman" Balsis, Michael Eufemia, and watching other world class players frequently play in NY such as Onofrio Lauri, Luther "Whimpy" Lassiter, Irving "The Deacon" Crane, Cicero Murphy, "machine gun" Lou Butera, Johnny Ervolino and a local NY player and pool friend Gene Nagy.

From 1966 to 1969 Ed's playing was somewhat limited while serving in a US Naval Air Squadron as an electronic warfare specialist. Ed had almost a 10 year lay off from pool after he was discharged from the navy. He first started working for AT&T in NY in 1970 after getting married and started to raise a family. At that time he also became quite active in numismatics (coin collecting) in NJ. It wasn't until 1980 when he once again picked up a pool cue and caught a touch of that infamous "pool fever". Since then he has competed actively and won a number of tournaments in NJ, and local tavern pool team championships. In 1992 Ed, his wife Manoli, and son Eddie opened the doors to Califon Billiards where he now makes his home and has been teaching beginner through intermediate level players for over 5 years. Recently retired from AT&T after 28 1/2 years of service as a technical support manager, Ed now plans on making pool his lifelong ambition and "hobby". A dream come true.

• Fees for instruction will vary based on time, location and complexity. Students are responsible for any applicable hourly table fees that might apply.
• Any of the courses will be modified to suit your personal needs and could be done with a partner, family member or for a group.
• Prices will be quoted upon request.
• Classes can be tailored to your specific needs, and schedule. They can be held at califon billiards, your home, club or association's recreation center or any alternate location.

Billiard Courses Offered

Below is just a sample of the billiard courses and instruction available at Califon Billiards:

• introduction #100 - initial analysis and a review of the basic fundamentals (target pool is encouraged for this session) (1 session 1-2 hours)
• introduction #101 - a general review and reinforcement of any of the basic fundamentals: approach, stance, grip, various bridges, stroke, aiming techniques etc. (1 session 1-2 hours)
• introduction #102 - in-depth analysis including a video taping session, feedback and a review of the basic fundamentals, identification of areas in need of improvement highly recommended for beginner thru intermediate player. Includes a copy of the video tape for your personal use. (2 sessions 1 hour each, for a total of 2 hours)
• intermediate #200 - a general coaching session, to work on specific areas of interest while playing a game of choice (1 session 1 1/2 hours)
• intermediate #201 - an introduction to the application of english, "top spin", "bottom spin" , or "side spin" (1 session 1 1/2 hours)
• intermediate #202 - an introduction to position play and the concept of systematic practice techniques i.e. practice drills (1 session 1 1/2 hours)
• intermediate #203 - strategies for good safety play includes a review of safety play techniques for 9 ball and straight pool (1 session 1 1/2 hours)
• advanced #300 - body awareness at the table, includes a general review of concepts that impact your game such as muscle tension, circulation, posture, relaxation and brief discussion on ergogenics (1 session 1-2 hours)
