Located at 1051-a West Patrick Street, Frederick Maryland, All-Star Billiards is probably THE players pool hall in Western Maryland.
So how did we get into the pool business? Well, Joe, the founding father, started playing pool in 1963 at the age of 11 in Enterprise, Alabama. He practically grew up in Ralphs' Cafe and Pool Room on Main Street, and was always either there or at Family Billiards. The game of choice was snooker, or maybe a ring game of 6-ball on a snooker table. Joe spent around 4 hours a day on the tables and learned from the old local masters, many of whom had played and beaten some of the greats of that era.
After graduating from high school, Joe joined the military and spent a year in Vietnam. Pool playing was sparse, but an occasional game was to be had. Joe married his high school sweetheart, Jane, in 1972, and after his military tour was over in 1974, he returned to his home town and resumed pool playing. He and Jane had 2 sons, Jeff (1974) and John (1980) who also grew up to be pool players.
Ralph had passed on, but the pool hall was still there, only now it was Annie's Cafe and Billiards (it is still there). Also, the Family Game Room had now become KO Corral, run by Joe's friends, Larry Krebbs and Phyllis Owens (it is still going also).
Joe and family moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina in the late 80's and began playing pool at Players, Little Reno's, and Fat Daddy's, but not as frequently as in the past. After a while, the real work took over and pool sort of went away for a while.
In the late 90's, Joe's government work took him and his family to Maryland, in the Baltimore/Washington, DC area. They settled in Frederick, Maryland, and found Champion Billiards in what is now All-Star Billiards. League play was hot there and Joe began playing, along with his two sons, Jeff and John. When the Nicholson family bought out the old Champions Billiards and founded All-Star Billiards, they asked Joe to operate the pro shop as a side interest. That is where we are today.
Some 54 teams consisting of over 400 players play leagues in All-Star Billiards, and the every Saturday handicapped tournament of 64 players sees some of the best players in the area. For more information, take a look at the All-Star Billiards Page.
