Advanced Pool Technologies Milford - Manufacturer Info

Advanced Pool Technologies of Milford, IA (A.K.A. APT Industries) is the company behind the Ulti-Mate Cue Tip Tool.

The company's founder and owner, Dave Gossman is also the inventor and patent holder of said Ultimate Cue Tip Tool.

Patents are US5104122A and USD332814S.

The tool is no longer being made in the original alloy version.

There are plenty of knock-offs of varying quality on the market today.

Someone asked about it on AZB in January 2009, and Gossman's Nephew, Mr. Reuben Fisher, replied with some company info:

The Ultimate Cue Tip Tool is my Uncles invention and business. His shop is 7 miles away from me. He has had some machine problems, and staffing problems since my brother left. We have tried to buy his business but, his answer has been NO for the last 2 years.

I have not talked to him in a few months, but heard a rumor from our step-brother that he may have sold the business. I have not confirmed it for sure yet.

Even I can't get any of the Ulti-Mate Cue Tip Tools right now. Hell, my brother and I offered to help him out, get his machines running again, and build our own (just so that we could have a few of our own), but he just laughed. I did get like 1000 extra "abrasive" pieces (which are not sand paper).

Anyway, at this point, I doubt any will come out of the Milford, IA shop again, but hopefully in the near future some will be available.

This is the best pool cue tip maintenance tool ever made. I find that the people who don't like them usually don't even use them right. For those folks, here are a few pieces of advice on how to use it properly:

  • When shaping your tips, don't push your tips down with force. Let the weight of the shaft be the pressure. Use the rolling motion, like starting a fire with a stick. Speed is up to you. Then move your shaft in a circular motion for best results.
  • The only reason the abrasive inserts (which, again, isn't sand paper) wear out is because you are using too much pressure.
  • If the abrasive gets clogged, take a damp (but not soaking wet) cloth, wipe them out, and presto! Like new.

The abrasive material never wears out unless you are using pressure. Don't say yours has worn out and you never used pressure. I have had mine for 10 years and I have never replaced them.

And YES, I do know these tools and how to use them better than you do. I've built them, packaged them, and sold them for a long time, and I've literally shown thousands of people how to properly use them.

I am sorry if that last comment comes across as arrogant. I get frustrated when showing people how to properly use them and they argue with me. I just tell them to go ahead and ruin their inserts, and take a chance on damaging/grinding the hell out of their tip and even scratching their ferrule.

P.S. for those who hate this tool because you scratched your ferrule when replacing a tip and used the side sanders/burnishers:

  • This tool was made for taking out mushrooms from the cue tip. They were not made for taking 1mm+ of the side of a tip.
  • Also you are not holding the tool against the shaft properly anyway.

I believe other family members eventually started "Ulti Mate Billiard Products LLC" which carried out marketing and distribution of the modern-day Ultimate Cue Tip Tool. See links above for more info.
