I have many billiard books and DVDs for training, etc. I think I've tried just about everything on the market. Books by Grady Mathews, Robert Byrne, Mika Immonen, Bert Kinister, IPAT 1, 2, and 3 (International Playing Ability Test), Tom "Dr. Cue" Rossman, and on and on.
There is a new series on the market that lets you see before you buy, it's from one of the best technical experts in the field of pool and one really top player and teacher. Tom Ross and Dr. Dave Alciatore have teamed up to produce "Video Encyclopedia of Pool Shots (VEPS)" (link to amazon.com), which is one of the best training series I've seen because it takes good technique and applies it to live game situations. It has humor, good technique, it is packed with information and not spread out over 100+ DVDs. I think it is the best for value and great for the beginner, intermediate, and advanced player who truly wants to get better and is willing to invest the time and energy into watching and practice. Be prepared to use your rewind button, because you will need it.

Late followup to post but: I have these discs and they are very good for any player who needs to develop cue ball control (position) which I believe is the greatest skill attribute of all pool games. They go through every conceivable setup and show how spin and speed affect shots and offer scientific analysis concerning the physical properties of the entire process. I recommend this.
