Here is a free guide to playing pool in general (even though it is called a guide to 8 ball, it has a lot about cue sports in general).

It seems to describe the game in simple words compared to a lot of training articles I see which is good for the beginner pool players.

I found it wordy and about the game of 8-ball, not terribly focused on shot-making, fundamental skills development and stuff a self-proclaimed "newbie" should be getting into.

The various pool games are interesting, but before we engage rules and any specific game, I'd focus on the physical aspects of shooting, e.g., stroke, bridge, aiming and execution. Then, CB (cue ball) control.
