Definition of Stakes
Stakes is a billiards slang term that is a part of Gambling and Betting Terminology.
In billiards, the stakes refer to the money or other items that are bid by the gamblers or players. If each player bets $500 on the game, the stakes are the 500 dollars that each player bet. The term stake, or stakes may refer to pooled money being played for in a money game or in tournaments, as in billiards and other gambling activities. This very old term derives from players placing their stakea into a pot or other receptacle before play begins.
Stakes - Usage
I just bet $200000 on Efren, and I'm not sure that he can win. The stakes are so high.
