Stickmen Movie Plot
Jack, Thomas and Wayne are the Stickmen. They like nothing more than to have a beer in one hand, a pool cue in the other, a coin on the table and their mates around them. They play pub pool for fun and money at Dave's bar. Desperate to get out of debt, Dave gets the Stickmen entered into a high stakes pool tournament run by vicious crime boss "Daddy". He also gets them into a whole rack of trouble. Can the Stickmen beat the odds, pocket the money, win the girls and save Dave? You rack 'em, they crack 'em. And never take your eye off the ball.
Synopsis
Thomas, Jack and Wayne are the best of mates. Together they're the Stickmen, playing an on-going stake game of pub pool that sees them touring the dark underbelly of Wellington's pub scene.
Each of them lives their life the way they play pool. Thomas is either "on" or "off". His game can be one of two things - absolutely brilliant or absolutely crap. Jack is always slick, cool and forever setting up the next shot. Wayne is, well, Wayne. He bumbles his way through life happy to be the guy that always says the wrong thing at the wrong time.
During the high stakes pool tournament a weird and wonderful collection of players stand in their way of winning the big cash prize. And behind it all is the sinister omnipresence of Daddy, a Greek crime lord who pulls all the strings.
So can the Stickmen make it? After all, the bad guys have got some pretty dirty tricks up their sleeves.
Against the backdrop of the tournament Thomas is at turning point in his life. He's lost his job, his girlfriend and the roof over his head. But as the game goes on he finds himself being pursued by the feisty Sara - a girl with a lot of attitude and a big secret.
This is a story that revolves around a series of sticky felt tables in smoke-filled bars. It's the pure distillation of warfare. In any given night a pool table will see casualties, victors, victims and legends. Pool gets under your skin. It becomes part of you.

Stickmen Cast Descriptions
Jack
Jack, with his extroverted personality and killer smile oozes sex appeal and sells himself very well. Women are instantly drawn to his looks and cocky personality. And nobody knows it better than himself. He is a selfish man who puts himself before any woman in his life. He has been playing pool his entire life, and can win just about any game he pleases.
Thomas
Thomas is a considerate, and smart man who thinks before acting, and is relatively shy around the female sex. He does, however, open up around his buddies, and he is the guy you can always rely on. Thomas is indeed charming, but his appeal is in his openness and innocence. "A man of simple wants and needs", he is a "safety" man, a player who always opts for the safest shot on the pool table taking do risks, but accepting no danger.
Wayne
Life seems to just happen to this guy. Constantly putting his foot in his mouth, even when the situation calls for diplomacy and tact, Wayne is innocent to the point of being naive. Underneath it all, Wayne has no idea of his shortcomings, but is utterly likeable.
Karen
This sexy, focused, and level headed woman always has her eye on the prize. While she comes across as cheeky and fun, the sharp-witted Karen is rather smart and thus, it is wise not to underestimate her. Underneath all this, Karen has a mischievous side that hides her personal agenda.
Sara
Sara is similar to Jack in that she has a raw sex appeal, and that she is her own top priority. She takes the lead in her relationships, and as Stickmen's writers say, she "grabs life by the balls and squeezes."
Dave
Constantly opening bars, and having them fold, Dave has been around the bar scene for many years. He is a charismatic bartender that everyone loves. While he dreams of one day owning a successful money-making bar, he struggles under debts and constant failure.
Holden
This guy is one bad dude. A career criminal, and truly shady character, Holden also has a twisted sense of morals, and is somewhat of a pool expert.
Stickmen Movie - Press and News Coverage
There has been a good deal of news media and other press coverage for the billiard movie Stickemen.
"Stickmen" Movie Promotion and News Coverage
This film has been hailed one of the most successful films to come from New Zealand. It was named in the country's top six most profitable films of the last 20 years, accounting both box office and international sales. Stickmen was also the first film to come from New Zealand that was available on DVD as well as VHS. The DVD version has numerous extra features, including the making of, both cinema trailers, the radio and television commercials, the House of DownTown music video, cast biographies, and, if desired, the entire film featuring running commentary from the director, Hamish Rothwell and writer, Nick Ward.
Stickmen had an exceptional reception at the Cannes Film Festival. Immediately following the festival, the movie was sold to numerous companies including Universal Pictures International for release throughout United States and the United Kingdom. It has been said that executives from Fox 2000 have also requested a screening for their executives following the positive press from Cannes.
Aside from the Cannes, Stickmen was further promoted through New Zealand's first national Open 8 Ball Pool Competition, in conjunction with Heaven Hill Bourbon. The "open" status of the competition means that entry is not restricted to chartered club or pool association members. This competition was held in February 2001, following the film's January release. The competition had a first prize of $10,000, a runner up prize of $2000, and over 500 additional prizes made up of mostly billiard merchandise. Entrance was obtained at a cost of $40, or by winning pool competitions in participating bars.

My favorite quote from the Stickmen movie:
I'd say pub pool is the perfect game. You can't fault it, it's got everything. Conflict... drama... thrill of the chase... strategy, and a cliffhanger ending. And sometimes the rules can be different, but the game... the game remains the same.
