Effective Retailing for Pool Tables
I just read an interesting article from 1999 where the Co-Founder and Vice President of the now-defunct Kasson Manufacturing (the makers of Kasson Billiard Tables) explained how retailers can be successful in selling pool tables.
She had the following advice on how a retailer can successfully introduce billiard tables into their product mix:
- The retailer's sales personnel must be experienced selling big ticket items
- The retailer must have access to adequate warehouse space
- The retailer should have consumer financing available
- The retailer should have a large showroom space
- The retailer should have expertise in advertising ancillary products
- The retailer should have trained installation crew
Almost 15 years later the billiard retail landscape has changed dramatically.
It seems like the smaller billiard shops are a thing of the past, and the market has consolidated into a few big-box players like Watsons, Family Leisure, Billiard Factory, etc. I also notice the obvious trend of pool tables being sold in general big box stores like Costco or Sams Club.
It also seems that an increasing amount of people are buying pool tables on the internet, although I wonder if that represent any significant amount. Isn't a pool table something that you want to see in person before buying?
Has anyone noticed any other trends in how pool tables are sold now vs. 10 years ago? What will things look like five years from now? 10 years from now?
