   Good question. I'd argue that they are good for tournament practice, since the steaks are generally quite low, or even non-existant. They can be good practice in dealing with the pressure and nerves.

   If you are okay with nerves, and looking to get on the fast track to a professional billiard carreer, your best bet is to join billiard associations such as the billiard congress of america. You should join a BCA sanctioned league, and enter tournaments as you see fit.

   It also wouldnt hurt to rub elbows with some big names in billiards if you can get some exposure to them.
