Combination and Carom Shots in 9 Ball

Combination and Carom Shots in 9 Ball

In the rules of 9 ball, it is said combination shots that result in the 9-ball being potted is a win; the example being given on this site as the cue hits the lowest ball which then hits the 9 and the 9 is potted resulting in a win.

But is it a legal win shot if the 9-ball is potted as a result of a carom?

An example would be the cue ball hits the lowest ball and then the cue ball hits the 9 and it is potted.

This question relates to the following billiard rules:

Yes, that is legal. As far as I know, the only exception to this would be if the 9 ball was not called. Not all tournaments require the 9ball to be called however. But yes, the carom is legal.

It is legal. Unless 9 ball needs to be called.

It is legal conspicuous if the 9 ball is being called.

Yes it is legal unless otherwise specified by the local rules of play.

Thank you for all your replies. In any case it is apparent the one shooting ought to know where the cue ball is going after striking any ball and call it in case the 9 is a strong possibility of potting. And if it's serious play it should be made clear ahead of the start of a game that caroms count for wins.

I have been working on my stroke flaws. My teacher, friend, instructor, mentor has told me he's very impressed that I found it and am keeping it. Oh wait, that wasn't directed towards me. I never owned the whole house. Just kidding @Justanotherevolutionary.

Sorry but that's not how the rules are laid out in league play. The game of 9 ball is Texas Express rules today. you don't even have to call the 9! Why should it be any different in casual play. Unless you're talking about a 6 cushion carom a player probably knows he's going to make the 9 or at least he has a chance. A blast away play will lose to the better player in the end IMHO. I'm playing 9 ball for the first time in many moons. I understand your frustration but if it bothers you play straight pool or 8 ball. There you have all shots called (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine-ball).
