Scratch After Pocketing Last Object Ball Before 8 Ball
I have a question about the game of 8 ball.
If you are on your last object ball before the 8 ball, and you make the shot but then scratch, do you lose the match?
Technically, wouldn't that be a "scratch on the 8 ball" since the eight ball was the only ball left on the table when the cue ball scratched?
This question relates to the following billiard rules:

Your scenario describes a "standard foul" in eight ball, and is not a loss of game. Instead, your pocketed ball remains pocketed and play passes to your opponent with ball-in-hand from anywhere on the playing surface.
It's not a loss of game because you have not "scratched on the 8 ball". You have scratched during a shot on your object ball, which is a standard foul. Remember that a shot is not technically over until all balls on the table have come to rest, including the cue ball. In your example, the cue ball has not come to rest yet after you pocketed your legal ball, and thus, you are still technically on that shot (and of course, you are not yet shooting at the 8 ball).
From the World Pool-Billiard Association standardized rules:
3.9 Standard Fouls (8-Ball)
If the shooter commits a foul, play passes to his opponent. The cue ball is in hand, and the incoming player may place it anywhere on the playing surface.
The following are standard fouls at eight ball:
- 6.1 Cue Ball Scratch or off the Table - If the cue ball is pocketed or driven off the table, the shot is a foul. See 8.3 Ball Pocketed and 8.5 Driven off the Table.
You only lose the rack (lose the game) in eight ball for the following reasons:
3.8 Losing the Rack (8-Ball)
The shooter loses the game if he
- (a) pockets the eight ball and fouls.;
- (b) pockets the eight ball before his group is cleared;
- (c) pockets the eight ball in an uncalled pocket; or
- (d) drives the eight ball off the table.
These do not apply to the break shot. (See 3.3 Break Shot.)
