Is the Table Still Open After Pocketing the First Ball and Scratching?
In 8 ball pool, is the table still open after pocketing the first ball and scratching?
Here is the scenario:
- On the 8 ball break, no balls are sunk so it is now an open table.
- The next player shoots and makes a stripped ball but scratches in the process.
Is the table still open because of the scratch, even though a stripped ball was sunk?
Or, is the table is no longer open, and even though the player loses his turn he now has to shoot the stripped balls moving forward?

In short, the table remains open because "choice of group" is only determined on a legally pocketed ball.
