What is the history of the "Ball in Hand" rule in 8 Ball pool?
I need this little bit of info to settle a discussion with someone who is still living in the 20th Century.
So,. what is the history of Ball In Hand. When and how did it start and who promoted it?

As I understand it, the concept of "ball in hand" was implemented when ESPN and the like decided to put billiards on TV. The game of 8 ball could be long and slow to watch. The creation of ball in hand and the shot clock promoted a faster pace and more excitement in the game.
I always recall the great games between Willie Mosconi and Minnesota Fats to be in the kitchen. I may be wrong about this but that is my best recollection.
