Eight Ball Last Pocket Question
Recently I was shooting last-pocket 8 ball with a guy.
I shot his last ball into a side pocket. Five minutes later he shot my ball into the same side pocket and said now we both are in this pocket together. I told him NO it doesn't work like that unless you make that rule understood up front. In that pool room we always give the person another pocket... which is ALWAYS any corner pocket.
I once read that you can only give out corners not sides. CAN YOU ACTUALLY GIVE A PERSON A SIDE POCKET when the situation happens in a side?
I've always thought that no matter what the situation, you can only give a person a corner pocket. DOES THAT RULE CHANGE WHEN IT HAPPENS IN A SIDE POCKET?
This question relates to the following billiard rules:

I used to play this game and we strictly played last pocket and that meant any of the six pockets. It is usually unwise to choose a side pocket unless the eight ball is in the middle of the table, but I am unfamiliar with any rule preventing using a side pocket How does a person choose a last corner pocket if the last object ball goes in a side pocket?

We always played if your opponent made your last ball by mistake you got to pick your last pocket.
Since the side pocket is not a desirable pocket in last pocket why should you have to keep it? What would prevent your opponent from purposely making your last ball to gain advantage?
